The Calypso King of Great Britain has died.

The Mighty Terror won the title in 1957, at a concert which was a prelude to the Notting Hill Carnival, and held the title to his death on 14th March 2007 as the competition was never run again.

Terror, real name Fitzgerald Henry, was born in Arouca, in Trinidad and Tobago on January 13th 1922. In 1953, he took a job as a fireman on a ship and arrived in England.

Gig Reviews

We had great fun playing on Saturday for Warwick Streets' 200th
Birthday. We had some reservations about the weather, but in true Bamboo
fashion the sun came out for us, and also for Russ Bravo who played a
fab set of his self penned songs.

Many, many years ago I went for an audition in a (very) small studio in Wood Green. The guy who answered the door was a tall blonde american called Pip (Walter/Dawson). He introduced me in turn to a jovial bearded songwriting chappie called Peter Bradford. They asked me whether I wanted to sing middle or top in a 'busked' 3 part harmony............

Jenn once had a serious career, but gave it up for music and a free elastic band. She studied the Dahomian nose flute for several years, but was forced to abandon it when an enraged music-loving camel ate all the instruments. The camel later expired..............

Our percussionist Dave Prowter has been missing from the band since late 2002 when he headed off to Andalucia in an old Mercedes van.

We'd like him back now -- so if anyone sees him please get in touch!

This is a great sing-along song, anyone can manage it because the chorus only has one word!

It's by the Roaring Lion, one of the greatest calypsonians. The lyrics aren't his greatest but the chorus makes up for it.

I know a little girl, she's beautiful and called Rosie
She is lovely, very attractive and pretty
But she is fussy, and wouldn't eat her potatoes
No cauliflower, macaroni or beans and tomatoes

Chorus:

But she says Bananas
Lovely Bananas
Delicious Bananas
That's the food for me;
Give me Bananas
Big ripe Bananas
Delicious Bananas
That's the food for me!

About the Band
An always-colourful, often-chaotic calypso carnival, The Bamboo Band are one of the South Coast's most unusual and entertaining live acts.

Based around a loose collective of musicians and artists, the band take traditional and contemporary calypso music, add a dash of anarchic fun, and end up with a unique sound. Read more...
